Importance of Hearing Protection

Any sound above 80dB can cause long term damage. When a gun or rifle is fired it emits an extremely loud sound, capable of severely damaging your hearing. The diagram below shows just how loud and damaging a gunshot can be to your ears:

It is essential to wear some form of hearing protection when shooting and Hearing Wales provide a range of different custom made options. These can be passive (protection all the time it’s worn), reactive (responds to the impact noise of gun-fire) or active products, combining digital noise suppression with amplified sound.

SHOOTING PLUGS

Shooting Plugs, Wales

Solid Plugs (Passive) These are a perfect and cost-effective solution for those who desire overall noise reduction. They don’t discriminate between sounds however so they are not ideal for those who need to hear conversation or other sounds around them.

Sonic Valve Plugs (Reactive) These use sonic valve sound filters which protect your ears from the sporadic nature of the noise encountered when shooting – allowing you to hear normal conversation when no gun is being fired. The valves let normal sound, such as speech in but shut down momentarily when reacting to the sound waves from a gunshot.

Digital Plugs (Active) The most advanced option in hearing protection for shooting, these electronic plugs use a microprocessor to amplify softer sounds such as movement in the undergrowth while cutting out the louder, harmful sounds from the gunshot. They can also include volume controls allowing you to increase the volume of distant sounds.

There are many advantages to a custom made product when compared to conventional ear defenders, mainly being their size and the extent of hearing protection that they offer. Traditional ear defenders are bulky and many shooters find that they can interfere with the gunstock. The protection they offer is greatly reduced if the seal isn’t completely flush to the person’s head – when worn with spectacles or sunglasses it is unlikely that the shooter is properly protected.

Surf Plugs Cold water and wind entering the ear canal can cause painful “Surfer’s Ear”. This is a narrowing of the ear canal due to an abnormal formation of boney growths protruding into the ear. It is thought to be caused by increased blood flow caused by cold water entering the ears, which stimulates bone growth. UK surfers are particularly at risk due to the year round cold water temperatures. There can be many adverse effects of “Surfer’s Ear”, including frequent ear infections and hearing loss.
