Hearing Wales Audiologist and mum-of-two Emma Arthure’s long years of practice in the field mean that she is able to take referrals from private health care giant BUPA.
Both BUPA patients and our own private clients know they are in an exceptionally competent pair of hands when they have their hearing needs dealt with by Emma.
Audiologist Emma is enthusiastic about the direction Hearing Technology is taking, particularly in terms of connectivity and the flexibility it offers users with hearing loss.
We caught up with Emma who told us how she started on her audiology journey 13 years ago.
“Whilst I was on maternity leave with my daughter, I applied for the Audiology BSc at Swansea University. At the time I was looking for a change in direction and the course really stood out. I had previously studied Social Science at Bristol University and was working in a customer service role.
“I spent the next four years studying at Swansea University, with NHS placements throughout Wales.
“At last, in 2010, I qualified with First Class Honours.”
Since qualifying as an Audiologist, Emma has work in NHS and private settings. She’s provided medico-legal reports to solicitors in hearing loss cases and has more recently become the only audiologist in our region to be registered as BUPA-approved.
But her motivations remain the same. We asked her what the most satisfying thing about her work was:
“Seeing a person’s face light up when you turn on their hearing aids.”
Emma told us that continuing changes to the hearing aid market meant users would be able to see a lot more flexibility in their lives.
“With advancements in technology in recent years we have seen the development of re-chargeable hearing aids and aids that connect to a variety of different devices such as phones and i-pads. I think its more than likely that this will continue in years to come, with perhaps the possibility of hearing aids with a WiFi connection on the cards. Who knows, your own personal Alexa could soon be in your ears!”
When Emma doesn’t have her Audiologist’s head on she spends time with her family… and on horseback.
“I have two children, aged 15 and 13 so being a taxi service for them takes up a lot of my free time!
“With a busy home life, I love to get out and about in the fresh air. I can often be found walking my dog along the Gower coastline. I enjoy spending time with family and friends and have recently re-visited my childhood passion of horse riding.”
