We came across an article on the BBC news website (see bottom of page for link) about some recent developments in tinnitus research and it got us thinking about one of our customers that we saw recently.
Last month one of our audiologists fitted a customer in Cardiff with a pair of Widex Unique hearing aids. He was really struggling with a loud high pitched ringing tinnitus which had been present for a number of years, along with a predominantly high frequency hearing loss.
As most cases of tinnitus are linked with an existing hearing loss, it’s estimated that around 80% of people with tinnitus can be helped with conventional hearing aids alone. The hearing aids amplify the sounds which are missing and in doing so, they mask the tinnitus. This means that when wearing the hearing aids the tinnitus is much less noticeable or may disappear altogether.
However, some people’s tinnitus may still be problematic and this is where Widex’s Unique range of hearing aids with Tinnitus ZEN Therapy come in. ZEN is available as a unique music program in all of Widex’s newer hearing aids. When the hearing aid is in the ZEN program it plays random soothing harmonic tones into your ears, which aid relaxation and mask the problem.
Our customer in Cardiff is getting on very well with the ZEN program and his tinnitus is much less noticeable. He says that wearing the hearing aids is really improving his quality of life and he is feeling much less stressed as a result of the ringing not being so obvious. Coupled with the improvement in his hearing he is a happy customer.

Notes on Tinnitus
Tinnitus can vary from person to person, from being a mild annoyance to having a profound negative impact on your life. It is a common condition, with a third of all adults reporting some form in their lives. Sounds may be heard in one ear, in both ears, or somewhere else in the head and can be of varying pitch, loudness and rhythm. Many people with tinnitus are able to localise the sound to one or both ears but some may not know where the sound is coming from. Tinnitus is most commonly heard as a high pitched whistle, although there are many different sounds that may be heard including whooshing, buzzing, hissing and rushing noises and you may hear a single sound or a more complex mix of sounds.
